Back To Work

I met up with Joyce to track after having several months off. I only took Chauncey and Joyce brought Ziggy and Henry, plus her new little puppy, Micah. Since Ziggy is training for his TDX, Joyce laid his track first so I could put in cross tracks a little later. We then headed to the next field where Joyce laid a track for Chauncey and I laid one for Henry. Henry's was a little over 400 yards, but I put it through a couple ditches and several changes in cover. We caught up on things while we waited for the tracks to age. Chauncey's aged for about 30 minutes and then I ran her. It was over 200 yards and just 2 turns. I wasn't sure what she would do after having so much time off.

Chauncey was excited to go tracking and was bouncing and doing flips all over the place. Once we got to the start, I had her sit to hook to her harness and she got focused. I told her to "find it" and she headed off down the track. She weaved back and forth down the first leg, but had settled in by the first turn. She worked the second leg and found the second turn, which was close to a tree with bushes under it. Chauncey found the third leg, but had to hunt around the tree a little before heading down the last leg. She headed straight down the final leg to her glove, so got lots of praise and treats when we got back to the truck. She did very well for not tracking in such a long time. I am pleased with her.

After finishing Chauncey's track, Joyce ran Henry, who did very well on his track. We are hoping to have Chauncey, Blueberry, and Henry in a TD test in March, so we will see how it goes. Henry passed his certification last month. Joyce then ran Ziggy on his TDX and he did very well. He checked the first crosstrack and then did well on the rest of the track. When they got to the second crosstrack, Ziggy worked this area a lot more before heading down the final leg and finding the glove. He is doign so well and has matured a lot in his tracking.

Kim~~ Are there any good books out there that you would recommend for someone interested in beginning tracking? I know nothing about tracking, but I have a Mini who LOVES to use his nose to find things.

I like "Enthusiastic Tracking" by Willaim Sanders. It is very good about explaing the whole process. I have also heard that "Tracking from the Ground Up" by Sandy Ganz and Susan Boyd is good. I have not read it yet, but most of the trackers I have been around like it.

Also, ask at your training club and see if anyone in your area tracks and see if you can get with them to see how they set it up. Once you get the idea it is pretty easy to follow through with.
